چکیده

For virtual reality scienti c visualization applications, the traditional navigational analogue of moving in a room (the \emersion" technique) is not adequate. Moving out of the simulation box and getting a panoramic view of the visualization is essential. In this way the sense of emersion is augmented by the ability of overviewing. Visualization applications also require that interactions in a global scale are possible at any time. We present in this paper non-linear motion control techniques that allow fast and intuitive control of the viewpoints as well as the hand positions within a virtual workspace. They allow the users to quickly move in and out of the simulation box, and at the same time interact with the simulation with the hand device no matter where the viewpoint is located. The principle is to divide the working range of a physical input device into several parts and use di erent mapping functions to map the parameters of the device into virtual space. Providing a consistent cognitive model and maintaining smooth transitions between subspaces are the basic requirements for this type of techniques. Our proposed techniques are natural to users

Goal-Directed Navigation for Animated Characters Using Real-Time Path Planning and Control

This paper presents a new technique for computing collisionfree navigation motions from task-level commands for animated human characters in interactive virtual environments. The algorithm implementation utilizes the hardware rendering pipeline commonly found on graphics accelerator cards to perform fast 2D motion planning. Given a 3D geometric description of an animated character and a level-t...

Using Haptic Vector Fields for Animation Motion Control

We are developing paradigms and algorithms for browsing and editing families of animations using a haptic forcefeedback device called a Phantom. These techniques may be generalized to navigation of any high degree-offreedom system from a lower degree-of-freedom control space, with applications to telerobotics and simulation of virtual humans. We believe that modeling the animation configuration...

Reinforcement Learning Approaches for Locomotion Planning in Interactive Applications

Locomotion is one of the most important capabilities for virtual human agents in interactive applications, because it allows them to navigate their environment. Locomotion controllers in interactive applications typically work by blending and concatenating clips of keyframe or motion capture motion that represent individual locomotion actions (e.g. walk cycles), to generate sequences of natural...
